Audience Engagement and Creative Organisation 5 ECTS (Master´s level), Spring 2026

The aim of the course is to provide a multi-dimensional perspective on the theory and practice of audience engagement when applied to the organizations that are focused on creative processes. Its particular focus is on the role for audience directed activities as central to the work of Cultural and Creative Sectors organizations’ professionals: cultural producers, managers, curators, and entrepreneurs in the cultural and creative field. The course is an opportunity to gain an international and cross-sectoral perspective on audience engagement practice.

Key contents

  • Theory and practice of audience development and audience engagement. The strategic and systemic approach to the audience engagement, cultural policies, democracy, and audience engagement.
  • Thresholds, liminal spaces, access, gates, and barriers. The spatial dimension of the work of cultural managers.
  • Audience-centred and creative process-oriented organisations.
  • The identities of CCS (Cultural and Creative Sectors) professionals in the context of increasing, deepening and diversifying audiences.
  • Audience research – the methods of cultural intelligence: the role of cultural/creative professionals, managers, and entrepreneurs in collecting and interpreting data – to know their audiences.
  • Audience engagement, sustainability values and digital transformation as new challenges and opportunities in our work with different types of audiences.

Evaluation

Assignments for 5 ECTS total, grading scale 1-5:

1) obligatory – a group work (open style – instructed by the course coordinator – exercises 2 – 4) and the final group’ presentation – groups are asked to submit the final summary (pdf) of their group work after the presentations in the hoodle.
2) obligatory – ’2-pager’ written assignment (instructed by the course coordinator) – audience engagement – creative organisation case analysis. The assignment submitted as a pdf.
3) optional – individualised 30’ online consultation on the audience engagement solutions for your future / current professional activities (on appointment – registration)

  7. You’ve secured your place to study! (If previous studies are a prerequisite for the studies, the place will be confirmed when the fulfillment of the requirements has been checked.)
  8. Once your registration has been processed, you will get instructions via email on how to activate your Humak credentials and how to log in to the Hoodle learning environment. Course specific instructions can be found on Hoodle when the course begins.
  9. You must use your Humak email in your studies.

Schedule and mode of delivery This Master’s level (EQF 7) course equals 5 ECTS (1 ECTS credit point equals about 27 study hours, 5 ECTS=135 hours).

Grading scale: The course is assessed on a scale of 1–5.

The course comprises of 4 sessions facilitated by the host lecturer of the course, (b) the access to the interactive Hoodle platform with the content to be studied by participants. The platform gives access to literature files, video materials, and digital sources. Webinars of AECO are organised as a zoom sessions. The first and the last meeting are planned as hybrid (= option for students who are in Helsinki to join the classroom in Humak headquarter – Ilkantie 4.).

Methods: hybrid as online and onsite; mixed method: lecturing, group work, reading and discussions, studying hoodle located digital materials and cases; assignments: group presentations, final written assignment (the 2-pager), an optional individual semi-structured final conversations with the course host.

Sessions no. 1, 3 and 4 will have a dual option (classroom and online), while session 2 will be online only (zoom). For those who are in the Helsinki area or want to join us live – we are organising this in the new classroom facilities of the Humak Headquarters building in the Haaga district of Helsinki – Ilkantie 4. If our meeting place in Helsinki is not close to your location, don’t worry if you can’t join us in person. The live presence is only an option and not a necessity. Everything will be available as an online broadcast/zoom session that will allow you to take an active role.
