Swedish for beginners 1, 5 ECTS, Autumn 2025

Key contents

Students familiarise themselves with the most common Swedish phrases and learn basic vocabulary and grammar to be able to manage everyday situations in Swedish. The course establishes the foundation for studying the Swedish language.

The course is a complete beginner’s course in Swedish offered online at the students own pace. No earlier Swedish studies are required.

Key contents of the course:

  • The students develop their metalinquistic knowledge and learning strategies.
  • They develop their ability to utilise their language repertoire in learning a new language.
  • The student can communicate in Swedish in everyday situations.

How to Register for Open UAS Studies

  1. Familiarise yourself with Open UAS registration instructions and cancellation terms. Read the descriptions and possible prerequisites of the courses you are interested in.
  2. Humak’s Open UAS studies are only available for students who have Finnish personal identity code.
  3. Register to the web store, choose a discount if applicable.
  4. Purchase courses from the web store during the registration period.
  5. Provide your personal information and a discount certificate if you have one via the personal information form. You can also find the form from the web store after your purchase. NB! Registration cannot be processed without the personal information form.
  6. Registrations are processed within 10 working days.
  7. You’ve secured your place to study! (If previous studies are a prerequisite for the studies, the place will be confirmed when the fulfillment of the requirements has been checked.)
  8. Once your registration has been processed, you will get instructions via email on how to activate your Humak credentials and how to log in to the Hoodle learning environment. Course specific instructions can be found on Hoodle when the course begins.
  9. You must use your Humak email in your studies.

Schedule and teaching methods The course is a complete beginner’s course in Swedish offered online at the students own pace. It covers interactive, both oral and written activities and small assignments. Learning materials include interactive online course assignments, texts and video materials published on the course forum. The course includes a moderate number of online webinars.

English is the language of instruction among with Swedish.

5 ECTS equals 135 hours of students work.

After successfully completing the course, the students will be able to

  • identify and understand simple and short Swedish words and sentences spoken at a tranquil pace.
  • identify and understand simple and short words and sentences in written Swedish.
  • produce a moderate number of simple and short words and sentences in both spoken and written Swedish.
  • manage simple discussions and everyday situations in Swedish.
