As a blended learning process, the course comprises of 4 sessions:

Session 1

  • The focused view (the micro-level) on culture and sustainability: the perspective of individual CCS (Cultural and Creative Sectors) professional.
  • Culture, Entrepreneurship, and Sustainability.

Session 2

  • Local communities, sustainability, and cultural production.

Session 3

  • Festivals and values. Creative tourism and sustainability.

Session 4

  • Sustainability and the nature of Cultural Projects and Creative Processes.
  • Sustainable lifestyles and aesthetic values. Creative professionals as mediators of the change.

Sessions no. 1 and 4 will have a dual option (classroom and online), while session 2 and 3 will be online only (zoom). For those who are in the Helsinki area or want to join us live – we are organising this in the new classroom facilities of the Humak Headquarters building in the Haaga district of Helsinki – Ilkantie 4. If our meeting place in Helsinki is not close to your location, don’t worry if you can’t join us in person. The live presence is only an option and not a necessity. Everything will be available as an online broadcast / zoom session that will allow you to take an active role.

Grading scale: The course is assessed on a scale of 1–5.

The course comprises of 4 sessions facilitated by the host lecturer of the course, (b) the access to the interactive Hoodle platform with the content to be studied by participants. The platform gives access to literature files, video materials, and digital sources. Webinars of AECO are organised as a zoom sessions. The first and the last meeting are planned as hybrid (= option for students who are in Helsinki to join the classroom in Humak headquarter – Ilkantie 4.).

Methods: hybrid as online and onsite; mixed method: lecturing, group work, reading and discussions, studying hoodle located digital materials and cases; assignments: group presentations, final written assignment (the 2-pager), an optional individual semi-structured final conversations with the course host.

Sessions no. 1, 3 and 4 will have a dual option (classroom and online), while session 2 will be online only (zoom). Method of instruction Online course Study period 01.10.2025-31.07.2026 Schedule and teaching methods This is a free online course for upper secondary level students and everyone interest in studying at Humak UAS.

Students will study the course independently online. During the course, you will study different materials and do various learning tasks.

Students study the course independently online at their own pace between 1.10.2025 and 31.7.2026. The course is recommended to be completed in a tight schedule. The scope of the course, 2 credits, corresponds to a total of approximately 54 hours of work.

The course is graded on the scale of pass/fail. Registration period and registration Registration period starts August 1, 2025 at 12.00 pm (UTC+3). Registration period ends May 24, 2026 at 11.59 pm (UTC+3).

– The panoramic view (macro level) on culture, arts and sustainability values.
– Cultural (eco)systems: policies, strategies, EU programmes and city actors. Creative partnerships for sustainability and innovation. Fair cultural cooperation – international and intercultural perspective.

– CCS (Cultural and Creative Sectors) organisations and sustainability values. Existential Sustainability and the role of the leader.

Sesion 3
– Organisational cultures oriented towards sustainability values in workplaces focused on the arts, cultural heritage and creative practice. Organisational symbolism, artefacts, rituals, narrations, and the power of storytelling.

Session 4
– Sustainability and planning. The time dimension of work of cultural managers.
– Intergenerational aspect of sustainability – cultural management applications.

Method of instruction Online course Study period 29.09.2025-31.07.2026 Schedule and teaching methods This is a self paced course in English. You can follow your own schedule. Just make sure you complete the course till the 31st of July 2026.

During the course, the student becomes acquainted with a multimodal view of interaction and examines the utilization of the concept in different working environments. The course is divided into sections which each take on a different focus on the topic. We recommend that you go through the topics in numerical order. However, it is possible for you to build your own path through the course topics.

Sometimes you need to complete a task or a reading before you can go on to the next task. If you find your access to the next activity restricted, check whether you have unfinished tasks or exercises.

Each topic has a set of learning activities which will help you to familiarize yourself with the course topics. After you have read or watched new materials you can test your knowledge with quizzes.

There are also discussion forums which will allow you to apply the new concepts and develop your understanding of the topic. Discussion forums will also allow you to learn from each other as you are asked to share and discuss your experiences or observations. Do use this opportunity to widen your horizons!

Total student workload hours: 81 hours (3 ECTS x 27 hours)
